General Description
The AS8310 is a single axis, low g accelerometer with
capacitive read out based on micromachining
technology.
The sensor concept combines the advantages of
monolithic and hybrid concepts and focuses on
mature, high yield batch fabrication process modules.
The full-scale range is factory programmable from
+/- 1 g to +/- 6g.

Functional Description
The AS8310 low g accelerometer is designed for
sensing single axis acceleration perpendicular to
assembly plane with very low transverse sensitivity.
The physical implementation involves a micro-
mechanical spring/mass-sensing element, which is
made from poly crystalline silicon. The movement of
this element due to acceleration is measured by the
integrated high performance capacitive position
sensing CMOS circuitry. Changes in capacitance as
low as 0.5 aF/ sqrt Hz can be resolved which results in
low signal noise.
Linearity and large bandwidth are achieved by closed
loop operation with position control of the sensing
element through electrostatic actuation. The sensing
direction is perpendicular to the IC plane (Z axis
direction).
The analog output is 1st order low pass filtered. It is
ratiometric, i.e., the output signal is proportional to
acceleration and to supply voltage. Sensitivity and
offset of the device are factory-calibrated through a
serial interface with OTP (one time programmable)
cells. Customer specific adjustments are available
upon request.
The AS8310 provides adjustable self-test capability.
This built-in self-test feature allows verification of
integrity of mechanical and electrical functionality of
the accelerometer. This feature is essential for safety
critical applications.
